Cyanotoxin Contamination of Oregon Water

Cyanotoxin Contamination of Oregon Water

NOTE: This is a letter of explanation on Cyanotoxin Contamination of Oregon Water and how Multipure filters address this issue written by Kenton Jones, Vice President of Marketing for Multipure. It is addressed to “Our Concerned Customers and Builders.” It goes into detail as to how Cyanotoxin contamination of Oregon water is a real health concern and how Multipure filters can help mitigate this problem.

A recent Emergency Alert in Salem, Oregon advised customers to avoid drinking tap water due to contamination with cyanotoxins.

Many of our customers and Builders in Oregon have expressed concern regarding the efficacy of their Multipure Drinking Water System to treat cyanotoxin-contaminated tap water. The short answer is that tap water treated by a Multipure Aqualuxe, Aquaperform, Aquaversa, or Aquadome will reduce the concentration of cyanotoxins in the water.

Cyanotoxins such as microcystin are often the result of harmful algae or cyanobacteria in the water supply. The same essential carbon block formulation that can adsorb cyanotoxins in water is present in our Aqualuxe, Aquaperform, Aquaversa, and Aquadome.

Furthermore, in a 2016 report, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released an analysis of cyanotoxin contamination in water, and indicated the specifications by which a carbon filter can effectively treat cyanotoxins in drinking water. Multipure’s carbon block filters meet these specifications, and although not all of our filters have been specifically tested for this contaminant, our products meet the requirements necessary to reduce the concentration of cyanotoxins in the water.

Multipure’s Aqualuxe has currently passed independent testing for the treatment of microcystin contamination in water. And as the Aquaperform filter utilizes the same carbon block formulation as the Aqualuxe filter (the Aquaperform does not possess the Aqualuxe’s microbiological filter elements), it can offer the same cyanotoxin-adsorptive performance verified through testing of the Aqualuxe filter.

And while the Aquaversa and Aquadome filters have not been specifically tested for cyanotoxin reduction, their carbon block formulation and adsorptive properties offer similarly high performance as the Aquaperform filter (the Aquaversa and Aquadome filters do not possess the Aquaperform’s Arsenic-V treatment elements). As such, they will also reduce the concentration of cyanotoxins in the water.

As a cautionary statement, note that the efficacy of any filter at treating the presence of contaminants in drinking water can be affected by the degree to which the water is contaminated. We are confident in the cyanotoxin reduction performance of our carbon block filters, but even the best filters may not be a guarantee against extreme levels of water contamination.

In summary:

  • Cyanotoxins can be treated by the adsorptive action of carbon block filters
  • Multipure’s carbon filters meet the EPA requirements to treat cyanotoxins in water
  • Multipure’s Aqualuxe has been independently tested and verified to treat microcystins in drinking water
  • Multipure’s Aquaperform, Aquaversa, and Aquadome use the same core carbon block formulation as the Aqualuxe, and therefore will reduce the presence of cyanotoxins in drinking water
  • Even the most effective filters are not a guarantee against extreme levels of contamination

Thank you for your trust in Multipure, and thank you for helping to Make a Difference toward cleaner water.

Sincerely,

Kenton Jones, Vice President of Marketing
